Patio Furniture – How to Find Comfort and Beauty

Best Patio Furniture Materials and Lowest Maintenance Options

With many styles and materials, selecting new patio furniture may pose a challenge for homeowners.  This quick overview of available finishes will help determining the most durable and low maintenance sets.

Synthetic Wicker

Also known as all-weather wicker or  resin wicker, synthetic wicker is a longer-lasting, weather-resistant synthetic fiber weave wrapped over an aluminum frame. Resin wicker is made with thin strands of PVC, nylon, polyethylene, or high-density polyethylene. It offers very low maintenance –  you can clean it with water and allow for air drying time. High-end resin wicker is UV-resistant, so it won’t fade or crack and it will withstand rain and sunlight.

To extend the life of your wicker furniture, avoid direct contact with chlorine and saltwater. Furniture covers or storing your wicker furniture indoors when not in use is recommended.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the most popular contemporary patio furniture material. It resists rust and moisture damage better than other metals and a powder coated finish will offer added protection against the elements. Aluminum is strong yet relatively lightweight, making it easy to rearrange and store. It requires minimal care and is easy to clean.

Teak

For natural furniture that also durable, teak is a great outdoor furniture material choice. Teak is a dense, close-grained hardwood with a natural oil content that makes it resistant to the elements. Teak provides incomparable durability that will last a lifetime if cared for properly. It withstands rain, sunlight, humidity, wind, and extreme temperatures.  It is actually one of the few woods in the world containing a  natural oil which repels water, keeping it from warping, cracking or becoming brittle.

Storage Tips | Winter

For outdoor furniture to last a long time, it should be put under cover for the winter. The options to store furniture include a shed, garage or basement space, storage unit, or under a tarp if left out during the winter. If using a tarp, tie the tarp securely to the furniture in order for the tarp to stay intact while leaving room for circulation at the bottom. Make sure to thoroughly clean the furniture before putting it away for the season.

Other Materials

There are many other materials available like Steel, Wood, Wrought Iron, Plastic, Polymer, and Natural Wicker.  All of these might be more affordable options for your patio furniture sets, but due to the durability or fading tendencies, they may need to be replaced more often.

When it comes to selecting  patio furniture, it’s best to consider your preferred style, climate and maintenance options.
